Editor's Review: One Dundas

There is no denying the exuberant and lively nature of Mong Kok, which embodies a vivid local lifestyle with a healthy dose of entertainment. When it comes to living, regardless of a short or long stay, it’s only natural to want to be in the heart of this vitality, while keeping a comfortable distance from it.

Standing 35 floors at the end of Dundas Street, One Dundas is a glamorous, if not luxurious, high-rise tower located a few blocks away from Langham Place, a roaring shopping enclave mixed with mid-end restaurants and retail stores.

This part of Hong Kong has it all – countless food options, innumerable shopping malls, cinemas, hotels, lovely cafes, and, oh, bars. Finding food is not a worry here, as Dundas Street is famed for its gastronomic adventure with a variety of local eateries and street stalls from Chinese dim sums to pork intestine skewers.

Connectivity is One Dundas’ natural edge, but there is also tasteful décor and quality mod cons inside the building to match the scene.

On arrival, the ultra high ceiling lobby may make you feel small, but my 479 square foot high-rise room, with sweeping views of far-reaching rooftops and the much-valued Victoria Harbour, will make anyone feel superior.

The space is generous with spare furnishings boasting a soothing ambience with elegant décor and slick white walls underpinning the far-reaching views from a canopy of floor-to-ceiling windows sprawling one side of the room.

The bar table dividing the living zone and the open kitchen pretty much suffices. A large welcome pack of snacks is a thoughtful touch that every weary traveller will want.

There are two terraces accessible from the living room and bedroom that make for a pleasant place to enjoy a drink and the sunset. Not my thing, though, I was (hate to admit) totally drawn to the television until night fell.

The en suite bathroom is graceful with a glass-enclosed shower that comes with premium toiletries. It makes for a wonderful night to unwind in the hot shower and crawl under the covers on a big comfy bed that is also facing a plasma and floor-to-ceiling glass door to the terrace. I can’t recall how I fell asleep that night – gazing at the screen or being mesmerised by the panorama – but it was quick, deep and sweet.
