What to Do When Your Air Conditioner Isn’t Cooling This Summer?

As summer brings relentless heat, air conditioning is essential in Hong Kong. However, if your air conditioner isn’t cooling properly, it’s important to understand the cause and determine if you can resolve it yourself. Choosing the right air conditioner also plays a key role in ensuring efficient cooling.

Air conditioners generally come in three types: window units, split-type air conditioners, and window-split units. Buyers can choose based on their needs and budget, with options ranging from affordable to premium, offering flexibility for everyone.

Window air conditioners are simple to install and more affordable, though they can be noisy. Split-type air conditioners provide stronger cooling power and operate quietly, but installation is more complex and costly, sometimes requiring scaffolding. Window-split air conditioners are designed for homes with limited wall space for installation.

Choosing the right air conditioner depends on the room size, with cooling capacity measured in horsepower (HP). For smaller rooms of 80 to 100 square feet, a 1 HP unit is sufficient. Medium-sized rooms of 100 to 150 square feet require 1.5 HP, while larger spaces of 150 to 200 square feet need 2 HP.

Larger HP units are more expensive, but using the correct size ensures energy efficiency. Oversized units in small rooms waste energy, while undersized ones struggle to cool larger spaces, leading to higher electricity bills and faster wear and tear.

Other factors such as the number of occupants, ceiling height, corridor length, and room orientation should also be considered. For west-facing apartments, a higher HP unit may be necessary. Apartments with long hallways leading to bedrooms can benefit from installing sliding doors or curtains to keep cool air from escaping.

If your air conditioner isn’t cooling effectively, start by checking the dust filter. Dust buildup can block airflow, so cleaning the filter monthly during summer is essential. If the issue persists, internal components like the evaporator, compressor, or condenser may have accumulated dust. Cleaning sprays designed for air conditioners can be used to dissolve dirt on the evaporator. When using these sprays, ensure proper ventilation by opening windows, and place a waterproof sheet or garbage bag under the unit to catch dirty water and prevent stains on walls or furniture.

If cleaning doesn’t resolve the issue, it’s best to consult a professional technician to inspect the unit for potential component problems.

When purchasing a new air conditioner, it’s important to balance your budget and needs. Window units are affordable and straightforward, while split-types offer better cooling performance at a higher installation cost. Choosing the right horsepower is critical to avoid energy waste and achieve optimal cooling. With the right air conditioner and proper maintenance, you can enjoy a cool and comfortable summer, even in Hong Kong’s intense heat.
