GREAT Food Hall Tips Its Hat to New Zealand’s Food & Wine Culture

The wonderfully diverse country of New Zealand has earned a spot on the international culinary map for its fresh, simple and sustainable cuisine, which gets full focus at GREAT Food Hall starting today through to June 26, 2014. This festival is also dedicated to introducing a selection of premium New Zealand wines, with the support of Watson’s Wine.

High Quality Lamb Leg

'Fresh Meats NZ' has a solid reputation for producing consistently high quality lamb from pasture to plate. The Gisborne-based company successfully achieves this by carrying out the full production process on its own expertly farmed land, which serves as the grazing grounds for its sheep taken care of by skilled farmers who adhere to the strongest animal welfare regimes. A full range of cuts is available, with the leg of lamb a highly recommended choice for barbequing, where it is easy to get it evenly browned and crusty on the outside, while pink and tender in the middle.

Renowned hot chilli sauce maker Kaitiai Fire is behind the creation of Waha Wera (the Maori term for ‘The Burning Mouth’), which is made from a combination of tangy kiwifruit, Manuka honey, spices and habanero peppers.



Treats

Donovans have been crafting artisan quality chocolates since 1991. The founder Patrick Donovan originally learned the trade from Karl Pajo, a Russian fudge maker famed for producing creamy confections. They follow the European way of chocolate-making, but source many of the ingredients except cocoa from New Zealand.

During her New Zealand tour in 1926, a Wellington hotel chef was inspired by the shape of the dancer’s tutu and created the now-famous, light meringue cake topped with whipped cream and fruit.
