Architecture, Culture And The City

BODW 2013, one of its main focuses was to act as a link between architecture and culture. Three entire sessions were dedicated to the subject and covered the themes of “Culture and the City” and “Cities Driven by Design”, of which the West Kowloon Cultural district project was a part. Highly awaited names from these sections were Richard Florida, Toyo Ito, Sou Fujimoto and Shashi Caan.

The famous Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto; youngest architect ever to accept an invitation to design the temporary Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in Kensington Gardens, London and 2012 laureate of the Biennale di Venezia Golden Lion delivered a wonderful speech about his design philosophy.



Keynote Japanese architect Toyo Ito; latest Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate whose main works include Sendai Mediatheque (2001), and the Toyo Ito Museum of Architecture, Imabari (2011)and who has written on the limits of modernism, explained how his design approach changed over the years as he grew to become better in his art.

Economic geographer Richard Florida, author of bestselling non-fictional novels The Rise of the Creative Class (2002) and Who's Your City? (2008) gave his views and advice on the future of the organization of cities.



Design advocate, educator, author, and principal of her eponymous design collective – Shashi Caan, shared her experience as a two-term president of the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers, and executive committee member of the International Design Alliance (IDA). She is also a sought-after speaker at conferences and universities across the globe and is principal of The Shashi Caan Collective, which offers innovative solutions in the areas of architecture, interiors, product design, and brand development.

Business of Design Week is an event which promises to impact the design world year after year and was, for the 2013 edition, yet again a ROARING SUCCESS, gathering over 100,000 attendees. Each year since 2002, it has brought Hong Kong to the forefront of the international design scene and has enabled designers, investors and the public to share ideas on design and also give a platform to the rising talents of the design fraternity.
