‘Belgian Spirit’ Comes To Hong Kong

Each year, BODW partners with a different country, with the ambition of giving Hong Kong more veneration on the international design scene and also to strengthen the ties between Hong Kong and the partner country. This year, Hong Kong had the honor of partnering with Belgium. With "Belgian Spirit” as one of the forum’s main themes, Belgian design was celebrated and Belgium’s business, political elite descended to Hong Kong for making the event a spectacular one which was presided over by none other than Her Majesty the Queen Mathilde herself.

Many world renowned Belgian design geniuses, each with their accomplished profiles presented their work and creative ideas in Hong Kong. Amongst them were notably Belgian product designer Xavier Lust, laureate of dozens of awards including Compasso d'Oro, particularly famous for his ‘le banc’ for MDF italia; Olivier Bastin, Chief Architect of the Brussels Region since 2009, who gave a brief history of the city and of the development of human relations in respect to architecture - he explained how architecture is associated with the connection between individuals and the city.

Anne Chapelle, CEO of Anne Demeulmeester and Haider Ackermann, Belgian Architect and Designer Charles Kaisin - is a pioneer in using recycled materials to create sustainable and contemporary design, designer of the K-Bench, who has been a Guest Lecturer at the Hong Kong Design Institute also graced the event.



BODW has put Hong Kong on the forefront of the global design scene, and has emerged in making it an international design hub. On top of helping to promote Hong Kong as a nerve centre for design and architecture; it also acts as a platform to showcase Hong Kong’s very own creative talent.

Many prolific Hong Kong designers and architects such as rising star Joyce Wang, founder of Joyce Wang Studio, iconic interior designer behind projects such as Ammo, in Hong Kong, and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, Kay Kwok, Hong Kong-born, London Based fashion designer and Henry Chu, multiple award-winning web designer, were put on the forefront of the event.
