Things to know before moving into Tung Chung

Tung Chung shopping centre

The youngest of Hong Kong’s many “new towns”, Tung Chung’s serene environment and close proximity to Cheung Sha Beach, Tai O and Mui Wo marks the area as one of the most sought after places to live in for singles as well as growing families. In addition, Tung Chung has a strong school network which ranges from local to international schools, making the area highly attractive for parents.

Land Reclamation

In order to increase land supply in the medium- to long-term, the government is planning to extend Tung Chung New Town over several phases with the entire project anticipated to be finished by 2030. The tender of the Tung Chung New Town Extension (TCNTE) project was awarded to Build King-SCT Joint Venture earlier this year, however, the project is strained with concerns of the environmental impact it will have. The first phase of the extension project is expected to be completed by 2023 and aims to reclaim over 100 hectares of land, house up to 49,500 units and provide 40,000 employment opportunities.

New Housing Units

The Housing Authority will introduce a new Home Ownership Scheme estate in Tung Chung Area 3 (near Yat Tung Estate). It will provide 1,200 units and is slated for a 2021 completion.

Air Pollution

Despite its beautiful natural landscape, Tung Chung’s proximity to the Pearl River Delta and a handful of transportation infrastructure means that the air may be below satisfactory at times; air pollution in the area is especially bad on days when there’s
little wind.

School Net

Tung Chung belongs to primary school net No. 98, which includes Tung Chung Catholic School Primary Section, HKFEW Wong Cho Bau School and Ching Chung Hau Po Woon Primary School. Its secondary school net belongs to Islands Districts, which features Tung Chung Catholic School, Po Leung Kuk Mrs. Ma Kam Ming-Cheung Fook Sien College and HKFEW Wong Cho Bau Secondary School. Schools in the district also include ESF’s Tung Chung International Kindergarten, Sunshine House International Pre-School, Discovery Mind Educational Organisation and YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College.
