Best International Schools on Hong Kong Island



Compared to Kowloon and the New Territories, Hong Kong Island has by far the most variety of international schools. With over 20 schools that cater to students of nationalities such as Japanese, Korean, French, German and etc, you should not have any difficulty in finding the right school for your child.

When picking an international school for your child or children, the first criterion should be the curriculum. Consider where your children will be going for college in the future, is it the US, UK or Europe? The curriculum of international schools in Hong Kong usually belongs to one of the following: British, American, Canadian or International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes. The criteria that follow include location, tuition fee, language of instruction and religion.

Chinese International School (CIS)

Chinese International School offers a bilingual programme taught in English and Mandarin to students in Reception to Year 13 (pre-K to12). The school campus is located in Braemar Hill, North Point, and made up of seven buildings with facilities such as an auditorium, black-box drama studio, 4 gymnasia, a 25-meter indoor swimming pool, fitness room and outdoor climbing wall. At the secondary level, students pursue the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years and Diploma programmes.

German Swiss International School (GSIS) 

With campuses in Pokfulam and The Peak, GSIS was established in 1969 to provide a bilingual German-English education. The school enrols students from kindergarten to secondary in two parallel streams known as the English Stream and the German Stream. The English Stream currently follows the British education system, completing GCSE and I/GCSE examinations at the end of Year 11 and then adopts the IB programme for Year 12 and 13. As for the German Stream, the curriculum offers an eight-year Gymnasium (German education system) course and is based on the core curriculum of German schools in Southeast and East Asia. It also has a Business College which offers Wholesale & Foreign Trade and Transport & Logistics Management training programmes.

With campuses located in Tai Tam and Repulse Bay, HKIS was established in 1966 and comprises of four all co-educational divisions: Lower Primary (Grades R1 and R2-Grades 1 and 2), Upper Primary (Grades 3–5), Middle School (Grades 6–8) and High School (Grades 9–12). HKIS is a Christian school with an emphasis on not only academic excellence but also spirituality, character development, self-motivated learning, contributing to society and Chinese culture. The school offers courses in French, Spanish and Chinese and has an extensive fine arts programme.

Island School

Founded in 1967, Island School is co-educational non-profit school that offers the IB diploma programme along with an alternative BTEC program in the senior years and in the middle school students study IGCSEs and the Island Futures curriculum. Facilities include 3 large playgrounds, a school hall, sports hall, dedicated rooms for drama students, a triangular-shaped sports ground and an outdoor swimming pool.
