Best International Schools in Kowloon

As an expat with small children of school age, you might find it hard to choose the right international school for your child though the choices are not too vast.

For those living in Kowloon, the peninsula offers fewer choices than Hong Kong Island but otherwise very good ones which are mainly concentrated in premium neighborhoods such as Kowloon Tong, Homantin and Kowloon City.

When picking an international school for your child or children, the first criterion should be the curriculum. Consider where your children will be going for college in the future, is it the US, UK or Europe? The curriculum of international schools in Hong Kong usually belongs to one of the following: British, American, Canadian and International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes. The criteria that follow include location, tuition fee, language of instruction and religion.

The most renowned international schools in Kowloon are American International School (AIS), Australia International School Hong Kong (AISHK), King George V School (KGV) and Yew Chung International School Hong Kong (YCIS).

American International School (AIS)

Situated in the serene neighborhood of Kowloon Tong, AIS is divided into three sections, all coeducational: elementary school (Early childhood 1 and 2, Grade 1 Junior, Grade 1–5), middle school (Grade 6–8), and high school (Grade 9–12). With students coming from over 40 nationalities, the school offers classes in English, Mandarin and French and it is equipped with a full-size volleyball court, rooftop basketball court and an early childhood center.

Australian International School Hong Kong (AISHK)

Also located in Kowloon Tong, AISHK offers the New South Wales (NSW) curriculum that allows Year 11 and 12 students to either pursue the Higher School Certificate of the NSW Board of Studies or the IB Diploma Programme. The school offers education from Reception to Year 12, with the school year running from February to mid December. The campus includes a 10-story high building and facilities such as an artificially turfed sports field, a gymnasium, a multi-purpose hall, a K-12 library, an auditorium, an aquatic centre with a 25-metre swimming pool and a green roof.

King George V School (KGV)

Founded in 1894, KGV is a co-educational secondary independent school for Years 7 – 13 students and is also one of the oldest international schools in Hong Kong. Students take IGCSEs followed by the IB or the British BTEC programme. Conveniently located in Homantin, the campus spans 10.2 acres and is equipped with facilities for a wide range of sports, such as rugby, football, girls’ lacrosse, basketball, netball, swimming and tennis.

Yew Chung International School Hong Kong (YCIS)

Located in Kowloon Tong, YCIS is a co-educational international school for students aged 6 months to 18 years (Infant & Toddler to Year 13) with a bilingual focus on English and Chinese language acquisition. It offers an IGCSE and IB curriculum and is also part of a network of schools that include Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing and Qingdao in China, and Silicon Valley in the Unites States. School facilities include a swimming pool, a gymnasium, IT suites, art rooms, design & technology rooms, auditorium, dance studio, tennis court, basketball court and etc.
