Keeping It Green

With our quickly degenerating environment, sustainable designers are the heroes of our time. We are encouraged to do our part for the planet as every little bit counts. Many designers across the world have heard Mother Nature's cry for help and have created eco-friendly, sustainably designed products.

Messenger Bag

Pennapa Shotlersuk of Belltastudio uses only the most sustainable materials for her designs. Her signature eco-friendly Kraft paper is recycled from waste paper to create a material that is tear-resistant, waterproof and lightweight. Her motivation lies behind the longevity of her products; consumers can constantly reuse them without the risk of waste.

Soy Melts

These Soy Melts are luxuriously fragrant scent cartridges intended for their ECOYA Oil Burner. They derive from sustainable soybean and palm oil plantations, which highlights the eradication of harmful chemicals normally associated with paraffin. These soy melts have a cooler burn sensation, and last a third longer than the commonly used paraffin wax candles. The Soy Melts are a natural alternative for home fragrance.

iPhone 4 Eco-Touch Case

Boris Design Studio has designed an eco-friendly smartphone accessory that uses sustainable corn plastic. This is a biodegradable and renewable material that turns corn into plastic without a dependency on petroleum. The iPhone 4 Eco-Touch Case protects the environment, and is a symbol of sustainability that you can hold in the palm of your hand.

Cardboard Vase

Chut! Collections is a company that abides by the principles of sustainable design. This Cardboard Vase is made of 100 percent recycled cardboard, which can then be upcycled; the whole recycling process naturally reduces your carbon footprint. The product is finished with eco-friendly lacquers, and is also packaged with recycled cardboard.

Rosary LED Lamp

Boris Design Studio has once again proven its dedication to sustainable design with the Rosary LED Lamp. The lamp is modelled around an LED module that promotes sustainable lighting solutions. The LED lamp uses less energy when compared to regular light bulbs. They have also made the disassembly easy, so that it can be more efficiently separated when it's headed for recycling.

Rusted Watch

Gideon Lai and Erica Ng for SDWorks encourage us not to throw out our old watches. Instead, with the Rusted Watch the pair has upcycled and reinvented old and rusty watches to create new vintage design pieces. There is a sense of timelessness in sustainable design as products can be recreated over and over again to bring out new ideas and trends. Upcycling can prevent waste and can also encourage positive creativity.
