Sometimes the stress of the city takes a toll on you – if you feel like you’re suffocating in the city and feel an urge to get away, Mui Wo is just a short boat ride away. While outlying islands such as Cheung Chau and Lamma Island are well known to visitors, Mui Wo’s fame doesn’t live up to its reputation. Whether you are looking for a weekend getaway or planning to relocate to a different district, head over to Mui Wo and find the joy in simplicity:
Silver Mine Bay Beach
While Hong Kong has an abundant amount of beaches, it is often difficult to find one that isn’t crowded or polluted. Luckily Mui Wo has a clean and pristine beach, where local residents and visitors can enjoy basking under the sun and listening to the calming waves. Silver Mine Bay Beach is just a short 15 minute walk from the ferry pier and if you get hungry, there are a few Chinese and Western restaurants available in the surrounding area.
Sai Kung may be the go-to place for good seafood, but Mui Wo is also another area famous for local seafood dishes. If you want an affordable option for delicious seafood, head over to Mui Wo cooked food centre for quality local cuisine. Other than enjoying local seafood dishes such as fried oyster omelettes and clams cooked in soya sauce and chili, you can enjoy the magnetic view of Silvermine Bay Beach in this restaurant.
Other than having a strong sense of community, Mui Wo is also famous for its avid cyclers. If you want an alternative to walking, rent a bike from one of the shops near the ferry pier and explore the local villages and the Silver Mine Waterfall. If you prefer, you can even rent a four-wheeled bicycle and ride off into the sunset with your significant other.
If you want to see a bird eye’s view of Mui Wo and discover the tranquility of the village Lychee Yuen, head over to Section 1 of the Lantau Trail which begins at Mui Wo ferry pier. Amateur hikers need not worry, since the hike is a fairly easy trail which lasts for less than an hour. Keep an eye out for feral water buffalos and cows roaming the area – sometimes they might even be right in front of you blocking the path.
Authentic Thai massage
After a long day of fun and joy, head over to Thai Pailin Massage and unwind with an authentic Thai massage. Massages may be fairly expensive in the city, but in Mui Wo it is very cheap and affordable. The massage parlour’s services include Thai Traditional massage, Thai Aroma Massage, Thai Herbal Steam and Thai Herbal massage. If you prefer a quick rub, foot reflexology and neck, shoulder and head massage are also available there.
