Popularly known as ‘The Wanchai Haunted House’, the two-storey Nam Koo Terrace was built in circa 1915-1921 as the residence of a rich Shanghainese merchant family. The family was evacuated at the onset of the Japanese occupation and was used as a military brothel for Japanese soldiers during 1941-1945.

Since then, there have been accounts of hearing cries and screams from the ghosts of comfort women who were brutally raped and tortured which has given Nam Koo Terrace the reputation for being a place of paranormal interest. Some people even reported seeing “ghostly flames” in the mansion.

In November 2003, a group of eight students on a ghost hunt attempted to stay the night inside the mansion. Rumoured to have been possessed, one of girls was spooked and had to be hospitalised, along with two other girls, to receive psychiatric treatment.
