Yew Chung International School (YCIS), is conveniently located at the heart of Kowloon Tong within the popular residential, tree-lined streets. This highly desired district enjoys excellent public transport, convenient shopping and many other amenities for the family close by.
Founded in 1932, Yew Chung has provided quality education with a bilingual focus to the learners of Hong Kong or over 80 years. Originally specialising in Early Childhood Education, YCIS now provides education through primary and secondary culminating in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.
Rooted by its exceptional philosophy, the programmes and administration integrate unique elements which are fundamental to the overall operation of the school. Chinese and Western Co-Principals create a school culture where Eastern and Western values are equal.
As a reflection of the distinctive education programme, within its bilingual and multicultural environment, YCIS has established a proven track record enabling students to move on to tertiary education in various universities in Hong Kong and worldwide, sealing their international mindedness.
Early Childhood Education (ECE)
The ECE programme provides a child-centred and play-based environment for children from six months to five years of age. Co-Teachers, Western and Chinese (Cantonese, with some Mandarin), plan and implement the day-today programme. This integrated curriculum draws from children’s interests, ideas and questions which are presented in their play, offering a model of acceptance of perspectives, attitudes and beliefs.
The Primary School provides an inquiry-based and international education based on the National Curriculum for England (NCE), which develops a positive learning attitude in every student fostering inquisitiveness, critical and creative thinking. Primary students’ typical week brings 70% delivered in English and 30% in Mandarin.
Arts and music form an integral part of the curriculum: compulsory violin lessons are provided for students
from Years 1 to 3 and are optional thereafter. In addition, various school activities are available for students including choirs, ensembles, etc. YCIS also participates in a range of community, charity and environmental protection activities.
Students will find a vibrant and stimulating environment for learning and social development. The strong academic curriculum is partnered with a wide range of co-curricular activities.
The curriculum of the Lower Secondary / Middle School (Years 7 to 9) follows the National Curriculum for England’s (NCE) learning objectives with some specialist adaptation to fit the region, equipping students with organisational and research skills, plus increased social and self-awareness.
Students advance to gain IGCSE qualifications, the most popular international certificate worldwide for 16
year olds, administered by the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Thereafter students progress to enjoy the rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Student Services and pastoral care are at the heart of the Secondary school as students enter this phase of their development. YCIS graduates receive excellent career and university placement advice and support, leading them to reach their full potential. The alumni are today in leading industries and fields of work, throughout the world.
