Most of us want to be in the city to live, work and play. But with premium rental prices near CBD districts, many are priced out of the market and forced to move out to other parts of the city.
According to Squarefoot rental database, a 300 sq. ft. unit in Central fetches around HKD 30,000 per month. The same amount is enough to rent a 500 sq. ft. apartment in Tung Chung, which is a well-balanced neighborhood with high quality of living.
Located in the north of Lantau Island, Tung Chung is one of the city’s most livable districts with a perfect mix of city convenience and natural surroundings. It is the starting point of many tourist spots on the island, including Tai O, The Venice of the East, through the renowned hiking trail, “Tung O Ancient Trail”.
Tung O Ancient Trail
The route was once a passage for villagers to commute between Tung Chung and Tai O. It’s a pretty easy and relaxing walk with spectacular views and the route signs are clear along the way. It takes about four hours from start to finish.
As the walk is smooth with mild climb, it’s an ideal path for cycling, running and walking dogs. Rare species of flora and fauna can be found as you walk on it. The natural beauty of the mangrove forest, wetland, hermit crabs, dragonflies and lush greenery will give you peace of mind.
How to Get there?
To go for the hike, take bus route No. 38 to Yat Tung Estate from Tung Chung MTR Station. The trail begins at the catchment outside the Yat Tung Shopping Centre. Follow the sign pointing to Hau Wong Temple. The route takes you past San Tau, Hau Hok Wan, Sha Lo Wan, San Shek Wan, Sham Wat and finally Tai O.
Tung Chung Latest Development
Aimed for the next economic engine of growth, Tung Chung is set to transform into the third CBD after Central and Kowloon East. The imminent Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB), Tung Chung East and Tung Chung West train stations and a proposed third runway are underway as parts of its new infrastructure. But the development is still a controversial issue. The past decade has seen discontent over ecological threats brought by these large-scale projects.
New Residential Projects
Scheduled to launch in the third quarter, Century Link, Phase 2 by Sun Hung Kai Properties is the latest residence in the district, mainly featuring one- to three-room flats. As for the secondary market, residential estates from Tung Chung Crescent and Caribbean Coast to Coastal Skyline offer medium- and large-sized units.
