The low rise tong laus of Caine Road continues to be replaced by high rise apartments, with Wing Tai Properties’ The Pierre being one of the latest to grace the section near the Mid Levels escalators.
Although HBA is better known for being hotel design specialists, it has a well kept secret: it is also pretty good at residences. Wing Tai is one of HBA’s long established clients and looked to the Hong Kong office of the Santa Monica-based firm to create remarkable interiors for the 26-storey, 77 unit tower.
“Wing Tai is a discerning client who buys original art and accessories,” notes Paulo Dias, HBA’s associate director in charge of the project.
“The building’s architecture has neoclassical French details, and our inspiration for the entry, clubhouse and other public areas was taken from that.”
HBA was also responsible for the development’s sales centre and office, including show flats and handover units. For the former, Dias created two designs based on renowned brands Tiffany and Prada.
“The fashion brands helped to market the apartments and sold within three days,” Dias says.
“Each unit has a balcony with north facing views; the higher floors face Victoria Harbour. It was a challenge to make things work in 360 and 270 square feet, though! We developed an open kitchen with a sliding counter in monolithic marble, and used sliding rather than swing doors. For the Tiffany scheme, we included a feature wall in the signature Tiffany shade of blue.”
HBA had a generous budget to design and decorate the public areas, and brought in vintage Murano glass chandeliers in the lobby as well as vintage chairs.
“It’s an intimate clubhouse; like a residential living room,” Dias says. “Our client had a Fabergé egg, which we placed in a corner on a stand. We imagine young professionals living here, who appreciate contemporary design that isn’t too minimal.”
