Wrigley’s is set to launch a new chewing gum packed with as much caffeine as half a cup of coffee.

Next month, the company will release its Alert Energy Caffeine Gum across the US, an energy product pitched as a “portable solution” for flagging energy and an alternative to energy drinks, coffee and tea.

One piece of sugar-free gum contains 40 mg of caffeine – the equivalent of half a cup of coffee, and is available in fruit and mint flavors.

The new gum follows on the heels of AeroShot, a caffeine inhaler that received a lot of buzz when it was first announced in 2011. The portable, tube-like device contains 100 mg of caffeine, about the same amount as a large cup of coffee and is currently sold in the US.

The new caffeine gum isn’t the first developed to do more than freshen bad breath.

A Swedish chewing gum made with Vitamins A, B1, B6, B12, C and beta carotene, Vigo Gum, claims to help build stronger nails, hair, and healthy, elastic skin, while Trident’s Vitality line claims to ‘rejuve,’ ‘awaken’ and ‘vigorate’ with Vitamin C, white tea and ginseng.
