Located in one of Hong Kong’s most highly sought-after school networks and in the heart of what could be the educational heart of the Kowloon Peninsula, the American International School (AIS) has proudly ushered nearly 900 students through a curriculum rooted in American school standards each year for over three decades.

Since it opened its doors in 1986, the AIS has forged a reputation for both academic and social excellence that prepares students for university and, later, life in the real world. The AIS prides itself on having built an affordable, fully accredited independent, co-educational day school for both local and expatriate families, one that also embraces best practices in teaching and consistently seeks to innovate on a shifting educational landscape. A school should be a place where students can engage with friends, classmates, family and the community at large. The diverse student body, aged three to 18, benefits from the school’s core values — Justice, Knowledge and Love — which empower thinking, cultivate egalitarianism and turn out the next generation of global citizens.

At AIS students come first. On the Kowloon Tong campus, students are immersed in an academic curriculum modelled on American scholastics that prepares AIS students for university, and to achieve AP Scholars recognition from the US College Board. Graduating students regularly go on to attend the most prestigious universities in the US, including Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Rice University, and Parsons School of Design, as well as renowned international institutions such as the University of Toronto, University of Melbourne, Imperial College London and Les Roches International School of Hotel Management.

With a daily programme that comes to a close at 3pm, students are able to take time to participate in an enriching range of extra-curricular activities, among them performing arts and sport in the swimming pool, the Makerspace exhibition space, on the basketball court, and in the science and technology labs. Embracing its intimate, small school feel, all students cross paths every day, creating an atmosphere of mutual learning outside the classroom; one where students teach each other. Everyone in any student’s life is encouraged to get involved with their education, be it at the annual Winter Fair, a drama performance, a Band Slam for music lovers, or a TEDx talk that serves as a practice run for sharing ideas.

The campus, the teaching philosophy and the student-centred approach were all designed to complement experiential learning, leadership training and civic service that are part of the essential, evolving skills required for the real world. AIS and its state-of-the-art facilities begin students on the road to well-rounded adulthood, and plant the seeds of confidence for the future.
