If you are a dog or cat lover and are loathed to go anywhere without them, there is a home away from home that will accommodate you and your furry friend. Standing shoulder to shoulder with other buildings on the Sai Ying Pun end of
Connaught Road is the Citadines Harbourview Hong Kong. It’s home to 52 units, all of which are 1,000 square feet,
and true to the name, they all have a harbour view.
Ascott management took over, renamed and renovated the property in 2016. The units are open to long- and short-stay tenants, running at approximately 90 percent occupancy on average, and full house occupancy during peak times – understandable statistics given the unusual yet desirable combination of location, space, sea view and service.
Increasing the sense of privacy, when you walk out on to the floor of your unit, you will only see the entrance to your apartment. The rooms themselves are minimally furnished in neutral tones of wood, white and beige. The large window overlooking the harbour and the mirrored doors on the wardrobe also increase the feeling of space while the queen size bed is strategically placed facing the harbour, encouraging the idea of waking up to the magnificent view; window sill seating also gives guests another option to take in the panoramic scene. The bedroom and the living area is divided without walls, but rather by the positioning of the furniture.
Behind the bedhead is a desk, coffee table, sofa, TV and fully equipped kitchenette with a microwave and small fridge. There is also space for an extra bed or a cot if the unit is occupied by a small family. Continuing the modern and neutral tones of white and beige with mosaic tiles on the walls, the bathroom at the back of the unit is unusually spacious by Hong Kong standards. A glass division stands in for a shower door, that has a rain shower complete with complimentary toiletries that are replaced regularly. Linens for short-stay guests are changed daily and twice a week for longer stays.
While there aren’t washing machines and dryers available in the rooms, there is a communal laundry room to use free of charge with three washing machines and dryers on the second floor, complimentary washing powder is also available. On the same floor is a modern, moderately sized gym, that even though has a view of the highway, rather than
the sea, is bright, quiet and has machines from Life Fitness.
I was also taken to the rooftop during my visit that is available to be used by tenants and has a breathtaking, far-reaching view of Victoria Harbour and Kowloon. I’m told that as part of creating a sense of community with their guests, the Citadines Harbourview organises periodic get-togethers that include rooftop barbecues, where pets are of course welcome. I’m also told that during festival times, people gather to see the fireworks there given the great view from the property.
The community activities are posted on a notice board in the small but colourful lobby. It has 24-hour security and a reception that operates like a hotel for the most part. The building doesn’t feel like a hotel, nor does it feel like a serviced apartment block but rather a hybrid of the two. Its homey, community feel and pet-friendly policy make it understandable that some 40 percent of tenants stay up to a year. Its close proximity to the trendy restaurants and coffee shops of Sai Ying Pun, the five-minute taxi ride to the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal and the short walk to the MTR also make it an attractive choice.
Perhaps for pet owners though, the Sun Yat Sen Park across the road is the real bonus, giving furry friends the chance to stretch their legs in a safe space. The park also houses a public sports centre and swimming pool if guests wish to take advantage.
The Citadines Harbourview proved to be a very flexible option for anyone from the working professional needing to be close to Central, to the pet lover, to a small family on holiday or looking for somewhere to plant some temporary roots.
