Five-year-old TREE effortlessly blends sophisticated style with sustainability.
Rainforest Alliance. Fairtrade. Café Direct. Global Exchange. All of these are labels that are increasingly recognisable as a way of identifying ethical, sustainable and eco-friendly products and services. Seeing the little logo on the corner of a coffee package makes some of us think about the impact of our purchases, and more and more of us are choosing to buy the “right” product if we can find it.
The Forest Stewardship Council — the FSC — ensures the forests under its purview are 100 percent sustainable and its “brand” is another label we should all be looking for. It is the label that the vast majority of the furniture that is manufactured exclusively for TREE proudly bears. Since 2005 TREE has been sourcing and creating elegant, contemporary unfussy home furnishings from FSC-certified reclaimed teak in Indonesia. Boats, railway cars, buildings and bridges … there is no recycled wood source TREE won’t consider for its unique furniture.
In five short years it has become the first choice for consumers actively looking for a way to reduce their personal carbon footprint while indulging in luxurious and ethical home style. It is the perfect alternative to mass-produced uniform perfection; no two TREE pieces are alike.
It all started with the signature Husky table, designed by TREE founder Nicole Wakley, noted for its clean lines and the inherent character of the reclaimed wood, and TREE’s range now includes custom sofas and chairs and complementary accessories. The hand-finished furniture is made in Indonesia, where a wealth of carpentry knowledge and skill and familiarity with the materials make it easy for TREE to craft luscious items as well as support the communities it sources from. On top of that a large scale tree-planting programme was kicked off last year, amongst other charitable efforts, as a means of “giving back” to the countries, communities and people with which TREE does business.
And a focus eco-consciousness and respect for communities doesn’t mean sacrifice on services, a full slate that ranges from stunning retail locations in Soho and Ap Lei Chau to design projects and home styling consultations, to rentals and shipping. As committed as TREE is to the environment, it’s equally committed to its customers who have proved that sustainability, quality and style do indeed go together.
